Overview

Zurich Australia is the Australian arm of Switzerland’s Zurich Insurance Group — present in Australia since 1961, when Commonwealth General Assurance Corporation joined the Zurich group, and today the country’s largest retail life insurer (KangaNews; Intelligent Insurer). The business employs more than 1,000 people across Australia and New Zealand, and its life arm sells protection-focused products through independent financial advisers and bank channels (KangaNews).

The acquisition spree that built it

Unlike its big-four general-insurance rivals, Zurich Australia’s scale was bought, not built — and bought almost entirely from retreating Australian banks. In 2016 Zurich took over Macquarie Group’s life-insurance business; in April 2017 it paid $554 million for travel insurer Cover-More; and in December 2017 it announced its biggest Australian deal yet — the A$2.85 billion purchase of ANZ’s OnePath life insurance business (KangaNews). The ANZ deal was part of a wave of bank insurance divestments driven by tougher capital requirements, and it gave Zurich a 20-year ANZ distribution agreement reaching up to 6 million bank customers (Financial Standard).

When the OnePath deal completed in May 2019, Zurich became Australia’s largest retail life insurer with around 20% of the retail life market and 6% of group life, absorbing more than 500 OnePath employees (Financial Standard; Intelligent Insurer). CEO Mario Greco told investors: “This concludes our growth in Australia… It will make Australia one of our top countries” (Insurance Business). The consolidation finished in August 2022, when the Federal Court confirmed the scheme transferring all OnePath Life policies to Zurich under the Life Insurance Act 1995 (Insurance News).

Retrenchment and a new frontier

The expansion has not been one-directional. In 2014 Zurich exited Australia’s group life market, saying it had been “priced out” and could not participate sustainably as reinsurance rates and reserving requirements rose (Money Management). And despite Greco’s “concludes our growth” line, Zurich keeps finding new channels: from October 2026 it enters the personal home insurance market by underwriting and managing claims for Honey Insurance’s home, landlord and motor policies, distributed under Honey’s brand including through Bank of Queensland (Insurance Asia).

What this profile does not claim

This profile does not assert current market-share figures — the ~20% retail life share dates to the 2019 completion. The 1961 Commonwealth General Assurance milestone rests on a Zurich executive’s statement in a KangaNews interview; no pre-1990 independent history was available without first-party material. No Zurich first-party material was cited.
