Corrections policy
How to report an error, and what we do with it.
Profiles here are built from the public record, and the public record contains errors. So do we. If you can document a mistake, we want to hear about it.
How to report an error
Use the contact form and choose "Correction", or email corrections@factsledger.com. The most useful reports include:
- the profile's address (URL)
- the exact sentence you believe is wrong
- what the correct information is
- a source we can check — this is the part that lets us act
We can act on a report without a source, but only by re-examining our own citations. A correction that replaces one unsourced claim with another will not be made.
What happens next
- We acknowledge the report, normally within five working days.
- We re-read the source underlying the disputed claim.
- If the source does not support the claim, the claim is removed or rewritten immediately — we do not wait for a replacement source to be found.
- If a better source establishes different facts, the profile is updated and the last-updated date changes.
- If the claim stands, we explain to the reporter which source supports it and why. Disagreement in good faith is recorded as an open item on the profile where it is substantive.
How corrections appear
Minor fixes — typography, formatting, a broken link — are made silently. Any change to a factual claim updates the profile's last-updated date. Where a correction materially changes what the profile said, a dated correction note is added to the profile itself, rather than the previous version being quietly replaced.
Claims we could not verify
Profiles carry an "Open items" section listing claims we encountered but could not confirm. These are published deliberately: they show a reader exactly where the record runs out. If you hold a document that settles one, that is one of the most useful things you can send us.
