Overview

D.A.S. — Deutsche Automobil Schutz Allgemeine Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-AG — was the German insurer that pioneered legal-expenses insurance (Rechtsschutzversicherung). Founded in Berlin in 1928 as Deutsche Automobil Schutz AG, it grew into Europe’s leading legal-expenses insurer, was absorbed into the newly formed ERGO Versicherungsgruppe in 1997, and was then dismantled piece by piece: its Swiss, Luxembourg and Slovakian businesses were sold to Allianz in 2018, and its Irish, Canadian and UK operations to ARAG between 2021 and 2025 (Reference for Business; Insurance Times).

D.A.S. began in 1928 as a protection association for motorists — the full name, Deutsche Automobil Schutz, means “German Automobile Protection.” It received its concession as an insurance company in 1935, began offering legal insurance connected with transportation in 1941, and from 1954 expanded legal-insurance services into areas beyond motoring (Reference for Business).

The company internationalised early, opening an Austrian subsidiary in 1958, and was taken over by the Berlin insurer VICTORIA in 1961. In 1978 it founded D.A.S. Versicherungs-AG, which sold car, accident, liability and property insurance alongside legal cover, and in 1995 it set up a legal-insurance subsidiary in the Czech Republic — two years before the ERGO merger (Reference for Business).

Absorbed into ERGO

On July 4, 1997, four insurers — VICTORIA, Hamburg-Mannheimer, DKV and D.A.S. — combined to form ERGO Versicherungsgruppe, a holding headquartered in Düsseldorf. Insurance Times’ contemporary profile describes D.A.S. at that moment as “the No. 1 European legal expenses insurer,” with the new group writing DM 21 billion in premiums and serving some 15 million customers (Reference for Business; Insurance Times).

Dismantled and sold

From 2018 onward, ERGO sold off the D.A.S. network. First came the January 2018 agreement to sell DAS Switzerland, DAS Luxembourg and the Slovakian assets to Allianz — businesses that had generated €38.3 million in combined 2016 premiums. D.A.S. Slovakia was the country’s leading legal insurer with an 85.1% market share; DAS Luxembourg ranked second at 18.2%; DAS Switzerland ranked seventh at 6.2% (Reinsurance News; Homburger). The Swiss closing occurred on April 3, 2018 (Homburger).

In March 2021, the German ARAG Group acquired DAS Legal Protection Inc. in Canada — a Toronto-based managing general agent founded in 2010 with about CAD 29.3 million in premiums under management in 2019, part of the Munich Re/ERGO Group — after already acquiring DAS operations in Ireland (Canadian Underwriter).

The final piece fell in the UK: Arag acquired DAS UK in July 2023, finalised the deal in January 2024, and completed the integration, with the DAS UK brand — which had been Ergo’s UK legal-protection business for about half a century — disappearing from the market (Insurance Times).
